Section2.8Symbolic dynamics

The doubling map is relatively easy to analyze due to its nice interaction with the binary representation of a number. While most maps don't interact so smoothly with the bits or digits of a number, there is sometimes a way to find an encoding of the real numbers so that a function of interest does work nicely with that encoding. The general strategy is called symbolic dynamics.
